does blocking take away from a Musical Audition?
I have an audition for Les Miserables coming up on June the 1st, I’ve got lot’s of competition for the role I’m after (Jean Valjean) so I’m working my butt off to do the 2 songs we need to sing for auditions.
My predicament is… I’m working on one of my audition songs which is “Kansas City” from “Oklahoma!”, and while I was singing it, in the spur of the moment, I started adding small dancing/blocking to it, like throwing my arms up in a circle, some small spins, nothing HUGE, but some dance moves.
Normally I’d ask my producer “Hey…” let’s call her “Joe” for privacy reasons… “Hey Joe, would minor blocking take away from my les mis audition?” but sadly, she… Joe that is, is in Italy, I’ve asked a few friends and I’ve heard various answers. Now to end my long winded question, what do you think? does it normally add, take away from, or do nothing to a musical theatre audition?

I wouldn’t do it. I have no way of knowing how you look, but with your advisor out of the country, you don’t, either. While the director may or may not think that was interesting, it won’t do you any service if you look dumb and don’t know it. Besides, Les Miserables isn’t dance-heavy at all, and I CERTAINLY can’t see Valjean dancing around, can you? If you’re auditioning for a specific part, you want to mimic that part as much as possible without straight up acting it…and that means not making choices that show things the character would never do.

Eh, I think that’s mostly going to depend on the person you’re auditioning for.
Does the role your auditioning for even require dance? Is there a separate dance audition for the production? If that’s the case then it’s best to just leave the moves for that portion. They have it set up that way for a reason. And you don’t want the jaded casting director wish they had a gun instead of a contract to give you.
If not, then I guess my answer would be to go for it. Auditions are all about setting yourself apart and show casing the talents that you have. Keep it to a minimum, maybe let your friends see what all you had in mind, and then make your decision. You don’t want the director to be trying to figure out what your doing and not paying attention to what you’re ACtually there to do.
Hope this helps!

Yes in a musical it does. When you are doing a singing audition the director and other people observing you need to be focused on your voice and not be distracted by dance steps and blocking. For a musical you should also have a dancing audition which is where you should just be focused on dance. And of course you will have your reading audition where it is definitely okay to add blocking…it adds to your audition to add blocking when your doing a reading.
