Michael Jackson • *They Don’t Care About Us* feat. OLODUM • HQ
Jun 6th

“They Don’t Care About Us” is the fourth single from Michael Jackson’s album HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I. © 1996 MJJ Productions Inc. *Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing) was the one who came to MJ with the request to make the music video for They Dont Care About Us, a sort of protest song off the HIStory album. The duo went to the slums of Rio de Janeiro, where they enlisted the cultural group Olodum to participate in the filming of the video, which was controversial in Brazil for the possibility that it would hurt Rios image. Lee and MJ ended up collaborating on a second music video for They Dont Care About Us, which is set in a prison but is also more of a montage-type spot, involving footage of global injustices. Although very different in tone and style, both videos are equally what you would expect from Lee, who is known for creating awareness of issues affecting marginalized peoples. He and MJ were a perfect fit. (the “Prison version” was banned on most music stations due to its violent scenes). The music was changed slightly to fit Olodum’s style of drumming. The “Olodum version” (unofficial title) of the song has since become more popular than the original album version. Olodum is an internationally acclaimed Afro-Brazilian cultural group from Bahia, Brazil. Olodum (pronounced oh-lo-doon) was founded in 1979 as a bloco afro (African Bloc), a Bahian Carnival association highlighting African heritage and black pride through music, dance theater, and art …
