Bangkok, Thailand (CNN) – Thai Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva met with leaders of an anti-government Sunday in a much anticipated meeting that he was not finallyoduc agreement.

The opposition demands that the prime minister to dissolve parliament.

It is customary that the leader of a state to sit at the same table with the demonstrators. Abhisit finally agreed to talks after the protesters were removed from their audience and have regrouped in the main meeting place.

The “red shirts” – so named for his clothes – the thousands of people gathered in the center of Bangkok and have said that will go until Abhisit calls new elections.

Red Shirt leader Jatuporn Prompan Abhisit asked bluntly if I wanted to dissolve Parliament.

“If not, just return to the street and continue our demonstration,” he said.

What are the protests about?

The prime minister said he is open to the dissolution, but he asked if “the dissolution of parliament can really solve the root cause of the problem.'ll Use the time remaining in this administration to find the rules that can be accepted by all parties. ”

“[The] problem of polarization [in Thailand] has deepened too far to be solved only by the dissolution of parliament,” Abhisit told the meeting, which was television.

The protesters have given the government an ultimatum to dissolve parliament within two weeks. The opposition wants an answer on Monday.

Although no agreement was reached in the meeting, Abhisit said he was glad the meeting took place and ready for future meetings.

A second meeting is already scheduled for Monday.

The protesters – who are members of the United Front for Democracy against dictatorship, or udd – had given the government until 1 pm Sunday to create a time and place for the meeting, said party leader Weng Tokirakarn. The group demanded that Abhisit also sit on the negotiating table and not send a representative.

However, shortly before the announcement, hundreds of demonstrators away from the exterior of the Army 11th Infantry Regiment headquarters – where Abhisit has been living and where they had camped.

The protesters are supporters of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was overthrown in a military coup without bloodshed in 2006. Thaksin Thai Prime Minister was only to fulfill a full term and remains very popular.

He fled the country in 2008, while the PLACEng trial for corruption charges which he said were politically motivated.

The protesters say Abhisit was not democratically elected and have demanded that elections be called.

Since the overthrow of Thaksin, Thailand has suffered widespread political instability that has confronted the supporters of Thaksin supporters against Abhisit. Two people died and at least 135 injured in riots in April, when demonstrators clashed with protesters supporting the government.
