Los Angeles, California (CNN) – Actor Peter Graves is best known for his role in the series “Mission: Impossible,” died Sunday. He was 83 years.

While the cause of death of the actor was not immediately known, apparently suffered a heart attack, his publicist said.

Graves had gone to lunch with his family Thursday morning. After he returned home and entered the house, one of her daughters, she began to wonder why it had not come to join them, said publicist Sandy Brokaw.

The family went outside and found mass graves had collapsed. His daughter performed CPR but was unsuccessful in the recovery of the actor, said Brokaw.

Graves had enjoyed good health and was celebrating 60 years of marriage and 60 years in the business of entertainment. Continue working even when he was killed, said the agent.

He is most known for playing the character of Jim Phelps for all but one of the seven years of “Mission Impossible”, said the CBS from 1967-1973. He won a Golden Globe in 1971 for his work on the program, and was also nominated for an Emmy.

He took up the role from 1988 until 1990, when the show was a revival of the ABC.

In an interview with CNN in 1996, Graves expressed his disappointment with the Hollywood version of “Mission Impossible” – starring Tom Cruise – which included none of the stars of the original television series. Actor Jon Voight played the character Phelps.

“I feel that electedPhelps will tell you, “he said at the time.” They could have easily solved by either having me in a scene in the beginning and read me a telegram saying: 'Hey Boys, I'm retired, went to Hawaii. Thank you, goodbye, you're in charge now. ”

Graves also appeared as Captain Clarence Oveur in the 1980 film parody “Airplane!” – A role that was initially rejected, according to Internet Movie Database website. He changed his mind after meeting with the writers of the film, according to IMDb.

In recent years, Graves was part of a larger group that won an Emmy for Best Informative Documentary TV Series 1997 “Judy Garland: Beyond the Rainbow.” Graves was the site of the documentary.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Endress, and three daughters, Kelly, Claudia and Amanda Graves, according to IMDb. Graves was the brother of actor James Arness, who starred in the television series long “Gunsmoke” as Marshal Matt Dillon.
